Car Insurance

Germany is known in the automobile industry and residents generally own and drive their own cars on a daily basis. Like in other European countries, you will be required to cover at least the minimum level of car insurance in Germany.

Car Insurance in Germany

In Germany, it is compulsory for all drivers to have a car insurance in place. If you drive, you need a minimum of third party liability insurance for your vehicle to get it registered and have a German license plate.

The cost of your car insurance largely depends on the coverage you choose. There are three different types of car insurance in Germany: Third-party liability (mandatory), partial coverage damage, and full comprehensive insurance (both optional).

Why are the benefits of a Car Insurance?

No matter how trained we are as a  driver, something unexpected can instantly happen. It is designed to protect the owner against the costs of damage if an accident happens.

  • For liability insurance, the sum insured is EUR 100 million, of which EUR 15 million per injured party. Also, it includes the Mallorca policy (protection for rental car use in other European countries) and a cover for claims under the Environmental Damage Act (e.g. oil spills after an accident).

  • For partial coverage insurance, you are covered against elementary damages from:

    • storm

    • hail

    • avalanches of all kinds

    • theft

    • loss of keys after robbery

    • collision with animals of all kinds

    • animal bites including consequential damage (up to 5,000 EUR)

    • when using ships and ferries, through negligent acts

    • Allianz also covers the registration costs up to 200 EUR and the transfer costs up to 1.000 EUR.
